BOV Action Coverage – February 21st

Living Wage Campaign took a different approach to make our presence felt at the most recent BOV meeting. We called ourselves “Corporations and Students United” and greeted the BOV on a cold February morning in an effort to present them with fake awards such as “Labor Streamlining Award”, “Corporate Tool Award”, and “Human Capital Management Award”. President Obama’s call for a $9/hr minimum wage in his State of the Union address last week has sparked a nationwide conversation about wages. As the Huffington Post reports, though that $9/hr figure would be a slight improvement over the current federal minimum of $7.25/hr, it still falls far short: “The minimum wage should have reached $21.72 an hour in 2012 if it kept up with increases in worker productivity, according to a March study by the Center for Economic and Policy Research.” You can read the Huffington Post article here and the Center for Economic and Policy Research report here.
